ABSTRACT

Recent advancements in nanotechnology have resulted in improved medicine delivery to the target site. Nanosponges are three-dimensional drug delivery systems that are nanoscale in size and created by cross-linking polymers. The introduction of Nanosponges has been a significant step toward overcoming issues such as drug toxicity, low bioavailability, and predictable medication release. Using a new way of nanotechnology, nanosponges, which are porous with small sponges (below one microm) flowing throughout the body, have demonstrated excellent results in delivering drugs. As a result, they reach the target place, attach to the skin's surface, and slowly release the medicine. Nanosponges can be used to encapsulate a wide range of medicines, including both hydrophilic and lipophilic pharmaceuticals. The medication delivery method using nanosponges is one of the most promising fields in pharmacy. It can be used as a biocatalyst carrier for vaccines, antibodies, enzymes, and proteins to be released. The existing study enlightens on the preparation method, evaluation, and prospective application in a medication delivery system and also focuses on patents filed in the field of nanosponges.Copyright © 2023 The Authors.

ABSTRACT

The conventional methods used for the diagnostics of viral infection are either expensive and time-consuming or not accurate enough and dependent on consumable reagents. In the presence of pandemics, a fast and reagent-free solution is needed for mass screening. Recently, the diagnosis of viral infections using infrared spectroscopy has been reported as a fast and low-cost method. In this work a fast and low-cost solution for corona viral detection using infrared spectroscopy based on a compact micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) device and artificial intelligence (AI) suitable for mass deployment is presented. Among the different variants of the corona virus that can infect people, 229E is used in this study due to its low pathogeny. The MEMS ATR-FTIR device employs a 6 reflections ZnSe crystal interface working in the spectral range of 2200-7000 cm-1. The virus was propagated and maintained in a medium for long enough time then cell supernatant was collected and centrifuged. The supernatant was then transferred and titrated using plaque titration assay. Positive virus samples were prepared with a concentration of 105 PFU/mL. Positive and negative control samples were applied on the crystal surface, dried using a heating lamp and the spectrum was captured. Principal component analysis and logistic regression were used as simple AI techniques. A sensitivity of about 90 % and a specificity of about 80 % were obtained demonstrating the potential detection of the virus based on the MEMS FTIR device. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

The global COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a huge demand for the protective nonwovens. However, the main raw material of nonwovens comes from petroleum, and the massive consumption of petroleum-based polymers brings great pressure to ecosystem. Therefore, it is significant to develop biodegradable protective barrier products. In this work, a polylactic-based composite (a tri-layer nonwovens composed of spunbond, meltblown and spunbond, SMS) was prepared and applied for protective apparel. The surface morphology and chemical changes of the fibers were characterized and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The liquid contact angle and permeability, breathability and moisture permeability, frictional charge and mechanical strength of the samples were evaluated and compared. The samples degradability was also recorded. The results demonstrate that the optimum formula for anti-fouling treatment on SMS is F-30. The treated fabric possesses superior liquid repellency and anti-permeability, with contact angles of water and alcohol at 128° and 115° respectively, while the alcohol repellent grade reaches level 7. The treated sample has less strength loss but exhibits favorable breathability, moisture permeability and anti-static properties, which can meet the requirements of protective apparels. After fluorine resin coating, the composite still provide excellent degradation performance, and the weight loss rate reaches more than 80% after 10 days water degradation. These results provide new insights for the application of PLA-based SMS in biodegradable protective apparel. © 2023 The Textile Institute.

ABSTRACT

The wide range of symptoms of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) makes it challenging to predict the disease evolution using a single parameter. Therefore, to describe the pathophysiological response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19, we compared according to survival or death, the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the biochemical and immunological attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra from saliva samples and their correlation with chemometric findings. Herein, we demonstrate that ATR-FTIR spectroscopy allows the description of the events related to cell damage, such as lipids biogenesis and the secondary structure of proteins associated with lactate dehydrogenase and albumin levels. Moreover, humoral (IgM) and cellular (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-10, and IL-6) responses were also increased in patients who died from COVID-19. Copyright © 2023 Adriana Martinez-Cuazitl et al.

ABSTRACT

Oxadiazines are heterocyclic compounds containing two nitrogen and one oxygen atom in a six-membered ring. The synthesis and crystal structure of 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-methyl-3-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-oxadiazin-5(6H)-one (MPMP-OXA) was reported. The organic crystal structure of the synthesized compound was fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, NMR and LC/MS-TOF) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The MPMP-OXA crystal structure crystallizes in the triclinic system and space group P-1 with a = 5.9395(15) Å, b = 11.471(3) Å, c = 11.901(3) Å, α = 70.075(4)°, β = 83.454(4)°, γ = 78.016(4)°, V = 744.9(3) Å3, Z = 2 cell parameters. This work is aimed to study the weak interactions in the crystal packing of a new synthesized oxadiazine derivate. The contributions of the most important intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure were investigated by 3D-Hirshfeld surface (HS) and 2D-fingerprint analysis. The C[sbnd]H···O interactions as the most important contributors to the crystal packing between the oxygen of the oxadiazine ring and the hydrogen atom of phenyl ring appear as bright red spots visible on the HS surface. The hydrogen-bonded interaction of MPMP-OXA has been investigated using noncovalent interactions approach. The molecular docking studies for the synthesized compound were performed to gain insight into the inhibition nature of this molecule against DNA Gyrase B Candida and 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (SARS-CoV main protease) proteins and resulted in good activities for new anti-agents. Lastly, Bioavailability, druggability as well as absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity parameters (ADMET), and gastrointestinal absorption (BOILED-Egg method) properties of newly synthesized compound using smile codes were performed in detail. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT

To provide detailed information to aid conservators faced with soot removal, a survey comparing the removal of lamp black pigment, serving as a model soot, from three sample papers of differing roughness is presented. The efficacy of ten different dry surface cleaning materials—including sponges, firm and kneaded erasers, eraser crumbs, a cleaning putty, a solvent-free polydimethylsiloxane elastomer, and a dry swab—have been assessed using a handheld color spectrophotometer and image analysis of photomicrographs. Inspection of the cleaned substrates with a portable optical microscope revealed detailed information into how physical properties of cleaning materials influence the location of residual soot on the surface. 3D digital light microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to assess physical changes to the paper surface and to identify potential residues from the materials after cleaning, respectively. The results of this model study were compared with spot cleaning tests performed on a fire-damaged paper book cover. Limited access to laboratory spaces during Covid-19 lockdown motivated this research to focus on affordable ways to perform hands-on technical research outside of the laboratory, details of which are noted throughout this paper. © American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works 2023.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 crisis has led to a massive surge in the use of surgical masks worldwide, causing risks of shortages and high pollution. Various decontamination techniques are currently being studied to reduce these risks by allowing the reuse of masks. In this study, surgical masks were washed up to 10 times, each cycle under the same conditions. The consequences of the washing cycles on the structure, fiber morphology, and surface chemistry have been studied through several characterization techniques: scanning electron microscopy, wetting angle measurements, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy. The washing process did not induce large changes in the hydrophobicity of the surface, the contact angle remaining constant throughout the cycles. The composition observed in the IR spectrum also remained unchanged for washed masks up to 10 cycles. Some slight variations were observed during X-ray analysis: the crystallinity of the fibers as well as the size of the crystals increases with the number of wash cycles. The XPS analysis shows that after 10 cycles, the surface of the masks underwent a slight oxidation. In the SEM images, changes were observed in the arrangement of the fibers, which are more visible the more times the mask has been washed: they align themselves in bundles, form areas with holes in the mask layer, and are crushed in some areas. © 2023 American Chemical Society

ABSTRACT

The use of immunomodulators is one strategy in maintaining the immune system during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sungkai leaf extract from Peronema canecens keeps the immune system in good shape. Therefore, in this study, we formulated a self-emulsifying loaded sungkai leaves extract (SE-SLE) with oleic acid and virgin coconut oil (VCO) oil phases, span 80 and tween 80 as surfactants and co-surfactants in the form of PEG-400 and PG. Chemometric analysis was conducted by observing the typical pattern in each FTIR-ATR spectra. The pattern is divided into several groups based on the wavenumber and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) to identify the compounds contained therein. Grouping based on chemical properties via IR spectra on SE-SLE resulted in two large groups. The results obtained are beneficial as initial information in developing and optimizing the self-nano emulsifying drug delivery system formula.Copyright © RJPT All right reserved.

ABSTRACT

The most prevalent conditions among ocular surgery and COVID-19 patients are fungal eye infections, which may cause inflammation and dry eye, and may cause ocular morbidity. Amphotericin-B eye drops are commonly used in the treatment of ocular fungal infections. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is used for the treatment of dry eye, conjunctivitis, and ocular inflammation. However, poor aqueous stability and excessive nasolacrimal duct draining impede these agens' efficiency. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Amphotericin-B, as an antifungal against Candida albicans, Fusarium, and Aspergillus flavus, and Lactoferrin, as an anti-inflammatory and anti-dry eye, when co-loaded in triblock polymers PLGA-PEG-PEI nanoparticles embedded in P188-P407 ophthalmic thermosensitive gel. The nanoparticles were prepared by a double emulsion solvent evaporation method. The optimized formula showed particle size (177.0 ± 0.3 nm), poly-dispersity index (0.011 ± 0.01), zeta-potential (31.9 ± 0.3 mV), and entrapment% (90.9 ± 0.5) with improved ex-vivo pharmacokinetic parameters and ex-vivo trans-corneal penetrability, compared with drug solution. Confocal laser scanning revealed valuable penetration of fluoro-labeled nanoparticles. Irritation tests (Draize Test), Atomic force microscopy, cell culture and animal tests including histopathological analysis revealed superiority of the nanoparticles in reducing signs of inflammation and eradication of fungal infection in rabbits, without causing any damage to rabbit eyeballs. The nanoparticles exhibited favorable pharmacodynamic features with sustained release profile, and is neither cytotoxic nor irritating in-vitro or in-vivo. The developed formulation might provide a new and safe nanotechnology for treating eye problems, like inflammation and fungal infections.

ABSTRACT

A fast procedure obtained by the combination of fabric phase extraction (FPSE) with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed and validated for the quantification of favipiravir (FVP) in human plasma and breast milk. A sol-gel polycaprolactone-block-polydimethylsiloxane-block-polycaprolactone (sol-gel PCAP-PDMS-PCAP) coated on 100% cellose cotton fabric was selected as the most efficient membrane for FPSE in human plasma and breast milk samples. HPLC-UV analysis were performed using a RP C18 column under isocratic conditions. Under these optimezed settings, the overall chromatographic analysis time was limited to only 5 min without encountering any observable matrix interferences. Following the method validation procedure, the herein assay shows a linear calibration curve over the range of 0.2–50 µg/mL and 0.5–25 µg/mL for plasma and breast milk, respectively. The method sensitivities in terms of limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ), validated in both the matrices, have been found to be 0.06 and 0.2 µg/mL for plasma and 0.15 and 0.5 µg/mL for milk, respectively. Intraday and interday precision and trueness, accordingly to the International Guidelines, were validated and were below 3.61% for both the matrices. The herein method was further tested on real samples in order to highlight the applicability and the advantage for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first validated FPSE-HPLC-UV method in human plasma and breast milk for TDM purposes applied on real samples. The validated method provides fast, simple, cost reduced, and sensitive assay for the direct quantification of favipiravir in real biological matrices, also appliyng a well-known rugged and cheap instrument configuration. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT

Biomimetic strategies can be adopted to improve biopharmaceutical aspects. Subsequently, Biomimetic reconstitutable pegylated amphiphilic lipid nanocarriers have high translational potential for systemic controlled drug delivery;however, such an improvised system for systemic aspirin delivery exploring nanotechnology is not available. Systemic administration of aspirin and its controlled delivery can significantly control blood clotting events, leading to stroke, which has immediate applications in cardiovascular diseases and Covid-19. In this work, we are developing aspirin sustained release pegylated amphiphilic self-assembling nanoparticles to develop reconstitutable aspirin injections by solvent-based co-precipitation method with phase inversion technique that leads to novel "biomimetic niosomal nanoparticles (BNNs).” DOE led optimization is done to develop Design of space for optimized particles. Upon reconstitution of solid powder, the particle size was 144.8 ± 12.90 nm with a surface charge of -29.2 ± 2.24 mV. The entrapment efficiency was found to be 49 ± 0.15%, wherein 96.99 ± 1.57% of the drug was released in 24hr showing super case II transport-based drug release mechanism. The formulation has the least hemolysis while showing significant suppression of platelet aggregation. MTT assay does not show any significant cytotoxicity. This is a potential nanoparticle that can be explored for developing aspirin injection, which is not available.

ABSTRACT

The ongoing pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, is influencing global health. Moreover, there is a major threat of future coronaviruses affecting the entire world in a similar, or even more dreadful, manner. Therefore, effective and biocompatible therapeutic options against coronaviruses are urgently needed. To address this challenge, medical specialists require a well-informed and safe approach to treating human coronaviruses (HCoVs). Herein, an environmental friendly approach for viral inactivation, based on plasma technology, was considered. A microwave plasma system was employed for the generation of the high amount of gaseous nitric oxide to prepare nitric oxide enriched plasma-activated water (NO-PAW), the effects of which on coronaviruses, have not been reported to date. To determine these effects, alpha-HCoV-229E was used in an experimental model. We found that NO-PAW treatment effectively inhibited coronavirus infection in host lung cells, visualized by evaluating the cytopathic effect and expression level of spike proteins. Interestingly, NO-PAW showed minimal toxicity towards lung host cells, suggesting its potential for therapeutic application. Moreover, this new approach resulted in viral inactivation and greatly improved the gene levels involved in host antiviral responses. Together, our findings provide evidence of an initiation point for further progress toward the clinical development of antiviral treatments, including such coronaviruses. © 2022 The Authors

ABSTRACT

With the emergence of the COVID-19, masks and protective clothing have been used in huge quantities. A large number of non-degradable materials have severely damaged the ecological environment. Now, people are increasingly pursuing the use of environmentally friendly materials to replace traditional chemical materials. Silk fibroin (SF) and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) have received increasing attention because of their unique biodegradability and biocompatibility. In this paper, a series of biodegradable SF/PHBV nanofiber membranes with different PHBV content were fabricated by using electrospinning technology. The morphology of the electrospun SF/PHBV composite nanofiber was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average diameters of the pure SF, SF/PHBV (4/1), SF/PHBV (3/1), and SF/PHBV (2/1) nanofibers were 55.16 ± 12.38 nm, 75.93 ± 21.83 nm, 69.35 ± 21.55 nm, and 61.40 ± 12.31 nm, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to explore the microstructure of the electrospun SF/PHBV composite nanofiber. The crystallization ability of the composite nanofiber was greatly improved with the addition of PHBV. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the thermal stability of SF was better than PHBV obviously, so SF could improve the thermal stability of the composite materials within a certain range. The mechanical properties of the electrospun nanofiber membranes were evaluated by using a universal testing machine. In general, the elongation of the composite nanofiber membranes decreased, and the breaking strength increased with the addition of PHBV. The small pore size of the nanofiber membranes ensured that they had good application prospects in the field of filtration and protection. When the spinning time was 1 h, the filtration efficiency of SF/PHBV/PLA composite materials remained above 95%. © 2021 The Textile Institute.

ABSTRACT

The CO2 emission is enhancing drastically because of the continuous emission from industries and transport sector. Although the CO2 emission had decreased in the first half of 2020 by 8.8% due to COVID-19 restrictions however, it is again on the rise and it might exceed the estimated level in 2030. The current methods used for CO2 separation have serious operational and environmental constraints. To overcome these problems we have devised a supported ionic liquid membrane (SILM) incorporated with the blend of bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) of copper and magnesium ions (CuxMgx) and Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride [P66614] [Cl] ionic liquid (IL). CuxMgx MOF were synthesized and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). CuxMgx MOF with [P66614] [Cl] IL were immobilized on a flat sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. Single gas permeation tests of membranes loaded with 0.2/0.8 wt/wt% MOF/IL solution showed the highest CO2 permeability of 2937 Barrer and CO2/N2 selectivity of 33.26. The performance of SILM was also investigated with different water loadings of (30 wt % and 50 wt %) in addition to MOF/IL solution and at different feed pressure varying from 0.5 to 2 bars. Membranes showed enhancement in CO2 permeability to 3738 and 4628 Barrer whereas CO2/N2 selectivity decreased to 23.53 and 21.8 with membranes loaded with 30 and 50 wt % water, respectively, at a feed pressure of 2 bar. The gas permeation results show that the incorporation of CuxMgx MOF with IL in polymeric membrane enhances the CO2/N2 separation under humid conditions but slightly decreases CO2/N2 selectivity with an increase in feed pressure. The SILM synthesized in this research is highly viable for industrial flue gases because of the incorporation of phosphonium-based ILs that have high thermal stability. © 2022

ABSTRACT

Due to the high incidence of kidney disease, there is an urgent need to develop wearable artificial kidneys. This need is further exacerbated by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. However, the dialysate regeneration system of the wearable artificial kidney has a low adsorption capacity for urea, which severely limits its application. Therefore, nanomaterials that can effectively remove uremic toxins, especially urea, to regenerate dialysate are required and should be further investigated and developed. Herein, flower-like molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) nanosheets decorated with highly dispersed cerium oxide (CeO2) were prepared (MoS2/CeO2), and their adsorption performances for urea, creatinine, and uric acid were studied in detail. Due to the open interlayer structures and the combination of MoS2 and CeO2, which can provide abundant adsorption active sites, the MoS2/CeO2 nanomaterials present excellent uremic toxin adsorption activities. Further, uremic toxin adsorption capacities were also assessed using a self-made fixed bed device under dynamic conditions, with the aim of developing MoS2/CeO2 for the practical adsorption of uremic toxins. In addition, the biocompatibility of MoS2/CeO2 was systematically analyzed using hemocompatibility and cytotoxicity assays. Our data suggest that MoS2/CeO2 can be safely used for applications requiring close contact with blood. Our findings confirm that novel 2-dimensional nanomaterial adsorbents have significant potential for dialysis fluid regeneration. © 2022
